Rizzoli and Isles Cast

Recurring Cast and Guest Appearances

Based on Tess Gerrtisen’s popular book series of the same name, the TNT procedural detective drama Rizzoli and Isles has definitely captured the attention of millions of viewers worldwide. The show, already on its third season, has included some of the most memorable recurring characters and guests so far.

There are approximately over two hundred actors who made an appearance in Rizzoli and Isles. Some of them are veteran screen actors and the others are young to the business. There are those who became recurring characters to the series even if they haven’t made any appearances to Tess Gerritsen’s Rizzoli and Isles book series. Here’s a rundown of the recurring cast and some of the most notable celebrity guests who are relevant to the stories per episode.

Fans of the TV drama would certainly know the other two members of the rambunctious Rizzoli family, which do not share a lot of face time on camera. They are: Tommy Rizzoli and Frank Rizzoli Sr.

There’s Jane and Frankie’s youngest half-wit, ex-con brother, Tommy Rizzoli. As the youngest Rizzoli sibling, he first appeared in the second season of Rizzoli and Isles as Jane Rizzoli’s troubled brother who went to prison after running down a priest with his car at a crosswalk on his third DUI violation. A prodigal son who was coddled too much by their mother Angela had since brought more complications to the series. He is often not taken seriously, especially when he’s hitting on Jane’s best friend, Maura Isles. He flits from one job to the next after being released from prison. Tommy Rizzoli is played by Colin Egglesfield, who is famous for playing Josh Madden in the soap opera All My Children and Auggie Kirkpatrick in Melrose Place. He’s currently seen playing Evan in The Client List alongside Jennifer Love Hewitt.

Frank Rizzoli Sr. is Jane Rizzoli’s errant father. A plumber by trade, he owns a plumbing business called Rizzoli and Sons. He is a typical Italian-American Boston native who is in the middle of divorce with Angela Rizzoli and always managed to create tension and complications every time he appears on the show. Frank Rizzoli Sr., is played by Chazz Palminteri, an Academy Award winning actor who is famous for playing Cheech in 1994’s Bullets Over Broadway. He is also seen in The Usual Suspects and has several guests appearances in Modern Family and Wiseguy.

On the other side of the fence, there are several recurring characters that bring drama and tension to the ever-composed Dr. Maura Isles.

Constance Isles, Maura Isles’ adoptive mother, is a well-known visual artist and art historian. She has genuine affection towards Maura. She also kept her Maura’s real identity until Paddy Doyle came and confessed everything. Constance is enigmatically played by Jacqueline Bisset, the Golden Globes and Emmy Award nominated actress known for her roles in Nip/Tuck, Joan of Arc and many more.

Patrick “Paddy” Doyle is an Irish crime boss and Maura Isles’ biological father. He is also Maura’s secret protector, keeping tabs on her for years. Being a crime enforcer, he’s been targeted by the FBI for a very long time, long before Maura was born, which resulted to him giving up Maura for adoption and keeping the secret of her identity a secret. It was just recently, when he was shot during a sting, that the truth about Maura’s biological mother was revealed when he continuously murmured the word “Hope” while semi-conscious on the hospital bed. Paddy Doyle is portrayed by John Doman, who is famous for his role as Deputy Police Commissioner William Rawls on The Wire and Colonel Edward Galson on Oz.

With resources at hand and Jane Rizzoli’s piecing some puzzle pieces together with the help of a framed sketch of a woman crying over a tombstone and Paddy Doyle’s murmuring of the word “Hope”, Maura Isles was able to track down her biological mother – Dr. Hope Davis. Like mother like daughter, Maura not just resembles her mother in appearance but also in temperament and intellect. They both share the same predilection towards forensic science and other scientific process to aid them in discovering the real causes of death.  Dr. Hope Davis is played by Sharon Lawrence, who is an Emmy Award nominated actress famous for her roles in NYPD Blue, Grey’s Anatomy, One Tree Hill and many more.

Joining the fray is US Navy Admiral Frost, Barry Frost’s father. He appeared in the third episode in season two and is played by Ernie Hudson, who is famous for his role as Warden Leo Glynn in Oz and Winston Zeddemore in Ghostbusters.

It wouldn’t be a successful TV series without some good old-fashioned and oftentimes complicated romances. Our two women may breeze through crime scenes and murder investigations, but when it comes to love, both suffer the same afflictions like everyone else.

Jane Rizzoli has two main love interests in Rizzoli and Isles so far and several other men who show a bit of potential. First, there’s Jane Rizzoli’s old flame Casey Jones, a military man whom Jane has genuine feelings for. Casey is played by Chris Vance, who is famous for his role as James Whistler in Prison Break and Sean Everleigh in All Saints.

There’s also FBI Agent Gabriel Dean. Patterned after Tess Gerritsen’s character of Thomas Moore, Agent Dean worked closely with the Boston PD, and eventually Jane Rizzoli, in tracking down Charles Hoyt (a.k.a. The Surgeon). Agent Dean is played by Billy Burke (famous for playing Charlie Swan in the Twilight movie franchise). He’ll be seen in the upcoming post-apocalyptic TV drama “Revolution”.

Lt. Joey Grant, played by Donnie Wahlberg (Saw, Band of Brothers, Righteous Kill, The Sixth Sense, Blue Bloods) guests in the first season of Rizzoli and Isles and was clearly attracted to Jane Rizzoli too.

Giovanni Gilberti is a mechanic that has an eye for Jane Rizzoli. Often insufferable and desperate, he hits on almost all the women including Jane’s mother Angela. He is also often seen helping out Angela in whatever project she’s currently undertaking in order to get close to Jane or the other ladies. Giovanni is played by Matthew Del Negro, who is seen in other shows like Parenthood and United States of Tara.

Maura Isles is seen with potential love interests in several episodes of Rizzoli and Isles as well. Among them is Garrett Fairfiled (played by Mark-Paul Gossellaar), Maura Isles’ college boyfriend whose ancestry can be traced back from the Mayflower. And then, there’s the guy Maura saved, sculptor Dennis Rockmond, played by Eddie Cibrian.

Other notable guests and recurring characters are:

Michael Massee played the serial killer Charles Hoyt (Warren Hoyt in Tess Gerritsen’s Rizzoli and Isles book series). He’s the main villain in the first several books in the series and was eventually killed by Jane Rizzoli. He is also known as “The Surgeon” because of his vast medical knowledge and his signature MO of inflicting premise cuts on his victims using surgical tools. John Stark, his “Apprentice” is portrayed by Brendan McCarthy III.

Rondo, Jane Rizzoli’s informant, is a quirky, homeless man with a mysterious past and a penchant for giving Jane whacked-out information from similarly crazy people that turns out to be useful. He calls Jane “Vanilla” and aids her in any possible way he can. Rondo is played by Daryl Alan Reed.

Dr. T. Pike, the other medical examiner aside from Maura Isles, who is overly proud and arrogant and makes the lives of Jane Rizzoli and her team difficult when extracting information from him regarding a dead body. Dr. Pike is played by Ed Begley Jr.
