Rizzoli & Isles Cast and Crew

Rizzoli and Isles, Tess Gerritsen’s popular book series made into a television series has an amazing cast of characters that contribute to the unique blend of drama, suspense and comedy in one of TNT’s detective TV shows by the same name.

Here’s a rundown of the main cast of the television adaptation of Tess Gerritsen’s Rizzoli and Isles.

Jane Rizzoli or Jane Clementine Rizzoli is half of the Rizzoli and Isles tandem. She’s a Boston Police Department detection who previously worked in the Vice and Narcotics Unit and was then transferred to the Homicide Unit. Her character was first introduced in Tess Gerritsen’s medical thriller “The Surgeon,” the first novel in the Rizzoli and Isles book series. She worked with another detective, Thomas Moore, who’s hot on the trail of the serial killer known as “The Surgeon” (Charles Hoyt in the TV drama and Warren Hoyt in the books), who preys on women and inflicting precise surgical wounds. She was brutally attacked and was subsequently rescued by her former/old partner Vince Korsak.  She has two scars at each palm from being pinned down with scalpels by the serial killer. She also has nightmares from the ordeal. Brash, intelligent and sometimes prickly, Jane Rizzoli constantly tries to prove herself amongst her colleagues, making her way from being a patrolman after graduating from the Boston Police Academy into a homicide detective. She’s tough and smart, able to run and tackle perps like a linebacker. She also admits that she doesn’t like wearing high heels since it is difficult to run after criminals. Even if she’s allergic to dogs, Jane Rizzoli adopted a stray dog named Jo Friday that was rescued by Vince Korsak. Her lovelife is totally helpless, another reason for her mother to worry about.

Jane Rizzoli is played by Angie Harmon in the TNT detective TV show, who is famous for playing Assitant District Attorney Abbie Carmichael in Law & Order and Inspector Lindsay Boxer in Women’s Murder Club.

Dr. Maura Isles, the other half of the Rizzoli and Isles partnership, is the chief medical examiner of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. She’s a forensic pathologist, a bona fide breathing library. She’s also the Irish crime boss Patrick “Paddy” Doyle’s biological daughter, a fact she found out when her best friend, Jane Rizzoli, started investigating a case that involves her father. A child prodigy – a scholar, an honor student and an accomplished pianist – Maura Isles is Jane’s best friend even if they are virtually complete opposites. Where Jane is impulsive and impatient, Maura is calm under pressure. She’s a forefront of information and is always picture perfect even when in a crime scene at a back alley or a dumpster. She also hyperventilates and breaks out in hives when she gives a lie, which is a big problem when trying to keep something from Jane or when she’s dating. Nicknamed “Queen of the Dead” by the people working at the Boston Police Department, Jane Rizzoli’s ringtone for her is Chopin’s “Funeral March” as an inside joke.

Dr. Maura Isles is played by Sasha Alexander, who famous for playing Pacey Witter’s older sister Gretchen in Dawson’s Creek, Dr. Jackie Collette in Presidio Med and Special Agent Caitlin Todd in NCIS.

Vince Korsak, Jane Rizzoli’s former partner and unofficial mentor, has worked with her for years to form a bond. Like all the men the Jane Rizzoli’s life, Vince Korsak is highly protective of Jane. He considers her as a daughter and would often accompany her in her investigations even if he’s not officially her partner anymore, an arrangement he doesn’t like. When Jane was taken by Charles Hoyt (a.k.a. The Surgeon), Vince was the one who rescued her. Since then, he’s always been concerned about Jane especially when she doesn’t respond with his calls or messages immediately.

Like the other characters in Rizzoli and Isles, Vince Korsak has a certain peculiarity that was uncharacteristic of the older detective. He is known to have a soft spot for small animals, especially dogs, and is often seen watching videos of puppies and digs in his computer. He doesn’t get along with Jane Rizzoli’s new partner, Barry Frost, and would often engage in witty banters with the younger detective.

Vince Korsak is played by Bruce McGill, who is famous for playing the eccentric helicopter pilot Jack Dalton in MacGyver.

Angela Rizzoli, Jane Rizzoli’s overprotective mother is a typical brash and overbearing Italian mother. She’s a housewife that has a part-time job selling “Miracle Juice” and eventually started working in the Boston PD café after divorcing her husband Frank Sr. and would often be in various embarrassing situations that gets Jane involved somehow. She’s very protective of her three kids: Jane, Frankie and Tommy and also considers Maura Isles as a daughter. She started living with Maura too, right after the divorce.

Brash like her daughter Jane, Angela often meddles with Jane’s relationships whether it is romantic, work related or with Maura and often provides some comic relief in the series. She epitomizes and Italian-American mother, constantly making delicious Italian dishes that confounds her new boss in the café. Angela Rizzoli is played by Lorraine Bracco, who is famous for her roles as Jennifer Melfi in The Sopranos and Karen Hill in Goodfellas.

Barold “Barry” Frost is Jane Rizzoli’s new partner. He is the resident computer and tech whiz of the homicide squad that Jane relies often on getting information the modern way. Frost’s banters and arguments with Vince Korsak and lately, with Frankie, had provided some comic relief and lightness to each episode. His witty quips would also often cheer up Jane when they’re investigating a murder case. Recently, when Frankie and Korsak learned about his real name, he received a lot of teasing and taunts about it.

Frost has a peculiar fear of dead bodies and the sight of blood. He is known to cringe, vomit or pass out when close to a decaying body.  Like the other men in Jane Rizzoli’s life, Barry Frost is very protective of her and would often be caught in the middle of Angela Rizzoli’s maneuverings related to Jane. Barry Frost is played by Lee Thompson Young, who is famous for his recurring roles as a cyborg in Smallville and as FBI Agent Al Gough in FlashForward.

Francesco “Frankie” Rizzoli Jr. is Jane Rizzoli’s younger brother who is a uniformed cop for the Boston Police Department. He looks up to Jane as a role model and the reason why he signed in to become a cop, much to their mother’s chagrin. He is very protective of Jane and would often be handy in helping the Homicide Squad in some of their investigations. Frankie also has a penchant for being present at almost all the crime scenes Jane is working on. Frankie is played by Jordan Bridges, who is famous for playing Nick Porter in Conviction and Tom Hastings in Bionic Woman.

Rizzoli and Isles wouldn’t be complete without the supportive and strict Lieutenant Sean Cavanaugh, the head of the Boston Police Department’s Homicide Squad. A recurring character before, he’s now a main cast in the third season. He is known to bend the rules to help out his people. Cavanaugh is played by Brian Goodman, who is famous for his role as Donovan Stubbin in Line of Fire several recurring roles in Lost and 24.

Even if the television pairing of two people with differing personalities has been used a lot in creating many detective TV shows for decades now, Rizzoli and Isles has still captured millions of viewers worldwide because of the strong message of empowering women of all ages and the deep sense of friendship between all major characters of the series. Rizzoli and Isles, already in its third season, airs every Tuesdays at 9PM in TNT, a cable television network and a division of Time Warner.
