Rizzoli and Isles Cast

Rizzoli and Isle

Rizzoli and Isles, Tess Gerritsen’s popular book series made into a television series has an amazing cast of characters that contribute to the unique blend of drama, suspense and comedy in one of TNT’s detective TV shows by the same name.

Here’s a rundown of the main cast of the television adaptation of Tess Gerritsen’s Rizzoli and Isles.

Jane Rizzoli or Jane Clementine Rizzoli is half of the Rizzoli and Isles tandem. She’s a Boston Police Department detection who previously worked in the Vice and Narcotics Unit and was then transferred to the Homicide Unit. She’s strong, intelligent, confident and impatient, a veritable tomboy who has a typical overprotective mother and hovering siblings.

Jane Rizzoli is from an Italian-American family and grew up in Revere, Boston, in a blue-collar environment that was always noisy and full of yelling. She was chubby when she was younger, earning her the moniker “Rollie Pollie Rizzoli”. She first decided to become a cop when a police officer visited her school on Career Day when she was young. Jane Rizzoli was impressed and wanted the respect, gun and badge the cop has.

Brash, Jane Rizzoli turned her aggression into tackling perps like a linebacker when necessary, something she was trained for when she played field hockey as an attacker in junior college. After graduating from the Police Academy, Jane Rizzoli became a patrolman and worked her way up, first a detective in Vice and Narcotics, and eventually in Homicide. Frankie, her younger brother, is a uniformed cop assigned to the same Police Department.

Unlike her best friend Maura Isles, Jane Rizzoli doesn’t like wearing heels, saying that it is extremely difficult to run after criminals in high heels. Completely guarded with her emotions, she rarely let other people in and even gets uncomfortable when her mother hugs her. Like any tough cookie with a soft heart, Jane took in Jo Friday, a stray dog her partner Vince Korsak saved, even if she’s allergic to dogs. Jane Rizzoli’s love life is totally helpless, too.

When Jane Rizzoli took up with fellow detective Thomas Moore to investigate the murders of women dying with similar MOs (modus operandi), she was brutally attacked by the serial killer – Charles Hoyt – known as “The Surgeon” (due to his vast medical knowledge and the precise injuries he gives his victims by using surgical tools). She was attacked, pinned down the ground with two scalpels stabbed through the palm of her hands. Vince Korsak, Jane’s former partner, saved her in time. Even with Charles Hoyt in prison, Jane still has the scars and the nightmares to remind her of the ordeal. Jane Rizzoli eventually killed Hoyt in the Rizzoli and Isles second season episode titled “Remember Me.”

Jane Rizzoli is played by Angie Harmon in the TNT detective TV show, who is famous for playing Assitant District Attorney Abbie Carmichael in Law & Order and Inspector Lindsay Boxer in Women’s Murder Club.

Dr. Maura Isles, the other half of the Rizzoli and Isles partnership, is the chief medical examiner of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. She’s a forensic pathologist, a bona fide breathing library. She’s also the Irish crime boss Patrick “Paddy” Doyle’s biological daughter, a fact she found out when her best friend, Jane Rizzoli, started investigating a case that involves her father.

Maura Isles is a child prodigy – a scholar, an honor student and an accomplished pianist. Being Jane Rizzoli’s best friend brings her to the most adventure she had ever had, aiding in most of Jane’s investigations and a forefront of information. She also hyperventilates and breaks out in hives when she gives a lie. This causes problems when she’s dating, since men cannot sometimes handle brutal honesty.

Socially awkward (except when with Jane), Maura Isles is complete calm under pressure, a complete opposite of Jane Rizzoli’s and had often made people judge her as boring and unemotional. Because of her personality, she was nicknamed Maura-The-Bore-A in high school. But despite of this, there are moments when she becomes emotional. Never wanted to be called shabby, Maura Isles is always picture perfect even when conducting a thorough examination of a grotesque corpse in a back alley or dumpster.

Maura Isles loved examining dead bodies. The people in the Boston Police Department would often call her “Queen of the Dead” behind her back, not knowing that she was aware of it and doesn’t care. As a personal joke, Jane Rizzoli’s assigned ring tone for her on her phone is Chopin’s Funeral March.

Dr. Maura Isles is played by Sasha Alexander, who famous for playing Pacey Witter’s older sister Gretchen in Dawson’s Creek, Dr. Jackie Collette in Presidio Med and Special Agent Caitlin Todd in NCIS.

Vince Korsak, Jane Rizzoli’s former partner and unofficial mentor, has worked with her for years to form a bond. He continues to work with Jane even if they’re not partners anymore, considering her as a daughter and as protective of her like her mother Angela. He is known to have a soft spot for small animals, especially dogs. Vince Korsak is played by Bruce McGill, who is famous for playing Jack Dalton in MacGyver.

Angela Rizzoli, Jane Rizzoli’s overprotective mother is a typical brash and overbearing Italian mother. She’s a housewife that has a part-time job selling “Miracle Juice” and eventually started working in the Boston PD café after divorcing her husband Frank Sr. She’s very protective of her three kids: Jane, Frankie and Tommy. She often meddles with Jane’s relationships. Angela is played by Lorraine Bracco, who is famous for her roles as Jennifer Melfi in The Sopranos and Karen Hill in Goodfellas.

Barold “Barry” Frost is Jane Rizzoli’s new partner. He’s a computer whiz and has a peculiar fear of dead bodies and the sight of blood. He is known to cringe, vomit or pass out when close to a decaying body.  Very protective of Jane, Frost often gets into arguments with Korsak. Barry Frost is played by Lee Thompson Young, who is famous for his recurring roles as a cyborg in Smallville and FBI Agent Al Gough in FlashForward.

Francesco “Frankie” Rizzoli Jr. is Jane Rizzoli’s younger brother who is a uniformed cop for the Boston Police Department. He is very protective of Jane and looks at his sister as a role model. Frankie also has a penchant for being at almost all the crime scenes Jane is working on. Frankie is played by Jordan Bridges, who is famous for playing Nick Porter in Conviction and Tom Hastings in Bionic Woman.

Rizzoli and Isles wouldn’t be complete without the supportive and strict Lieutenant Sean Cavanaugh, the head of the Boston Police Department’s Homicide Squad. A recurring character before, he’s now a main cast in the third season. He is known to bend the rules to help out his people. Cavanaugh is played by Brian Goodman, who is famous for his role as Donovan Stubbin in Line of Fire several recurring roles in Lost and 24.

With every episode a blend of almost all genres, Rizzoli and Isles reserve its success among viewers to the enigmatic pairing of the unforgettable characters of Jane Rizzoli and Dr. Maura Isles. Even if the television pairing of two people with differing personalities has been used in creating many detective TV shows for decades now, Rizzoli and Isles has still captured millions of viewers worldwide because of the strong message of empowering women of all ages and the deep sense of friendship between all major characters of the series. Rizzoli and Isles, already in its third season, airs every Tuesdays at 9PM in TNT, a cable television network and a division of Time Warner.
